You Don't Need Better Prompts — You Need a Clearer Vision
The AI is smart enough. The bottleneck is your clarity. Describe what you want, how it should feel, and iterate when it's not unique enough. One idea gives birth to another — that's the real workflow.
The Prompt Engineering Myth
Vision-driven AI development produces better results than elaborate prompt engineering because AI models respond to clarity of intent, not complexity of instruction. The internet is obsessed with prompt engineering. There are courses, certifications, entire career tracks built around the idea that the key to getting great output from AI is crafting the perfect prompt.
We built this entire website with AI. Every page, every component, every animation. And our prompts look like this:
"Make the cards flee from the cursor when you hover over them. They should swap to an empty slot in the grid and leave behind a dashed outline."
"The filter pills should glow when active. Make it feel premium."
"This is boring. Make it more unique."
That's it. No system prompts. No persona frameworks. No chain-of-thought scaffolding. Just clear descriptions of what we wanted and how it should feel.
And the results are a website that people describe as "one of the most interactive blogs I've ever seen."
Why Clarity Beats Complexity
The common assumption is: the more detailed your prompt, the better the output. This is wrong in an important way.
Detail helps when you're specifying what. But most prompt engineering advice focuses on specifying how — step-by-step instructions, output format constraints, persona roles, temperature settings. All of this is the AI equivalent of micromanagement.
What actually works:
- Know what you want the result to feel like — not the exact implementation, but the experience
- Describe it simply and directly — pretend you're explaining to a talented colleague, not programming a machine
- Iterate on the result — say what's wrong, not what to do differently
The AI is smart enough to bridge the gap between your intent and the implementation. Your job isn't to eliminate that gap — it's to make sure the gap is between the right starting points.
The Vision-First Workflow
Here's how we actually built this site:
Phase 1: Have a vision — Before writing any prompt, know what experience you want to create. Not the code. Not the layout. The feeling. "I want the blog to feel alive, like the cards have personalities." That's a vision. "Create a React component that uses useState to manage persona text cycling at 7-second intervals" is a specification. Start with the vision.
Phase 2: Describe it plainly — Tell the AI what you want in the simplest possible language. Don't try to sound technical. Don't try to constrain the implementation. Just describe the experience.
"When I hover over a blog card, it should react. Not just a border glow — something more alive. Like it has a personality."
This gives the AI room to be creative within your intent. Over-specifying kills the solutions you didn't think of.
Phase 3: React to the output — This is the critical step that prompt engineers skip. Instead of re-engineering your prompt, just talk to the result:
"This is too subtle. I want it to feel like the card is trying to escape."
"The animation is good but the colors are generic. Make it feel more premium."
"This works but it's something I've seen before. What if we combined the fleeing mechanic with AI personalities?"
Each iteration sharpens the vision. The vision was always there — you just needed to see a draft to articulate the next level.
The Compound Creativity Effect
The most important pattern we discovered: one idea gives birth to another.
We didn't sit down and plan "fleeing cards + AI personas + mood filtering + article rivalry." We started with "I want the blog to be more interactive." That led to fleeing cards. Fleeing cards led to "what if they had personalities?" Personalities led to "what if they argued with each other?" Arguing led to "what if users could filter by mood?"
Each feature emerged from the last. The vision got clearer with every iteration, not before it.
This is fundamentally different from the prompt engineering approach, which assumes you know exactly what you want before you start. In reality, the best features are discovered through iteration, not specified upfront.
The key behaviors:
- "This is not unique enough" — Tell the AI when something feels generic. It will push further.
- "What if we combined X and Y?" — Merging two unrelated ideas creates things nobody has seen before.
- "Make it cooler" — Vague feedback works because "cooler" means "beyond my current imagination." Let the AI interpret it.
- "This works, but it could feel more premium" — Feeling-based feedback generates better results than specification-based feedback.
Case Study: The Article Rivalry Feature
Here's how the rivalry feature was born through vision-driven development:
- Starting point: "The blog cards feel isolated. They should interact with each other somehow."
- First iteration: Cards occasionally display messages about each other. (Too gentle.)
- Feedback: "This should feel like they're arguing. Like rivals."
- Second iteration: Two cards show speech bubbles with a back-and-forth exchange. (Getting there.)
- Feedback: "I want a little back and forth banter, 3 messages each."
- Final version: 18 rivalry scripts, 6 messages each, alternating between card pairs, cycling every 25 seconds with orange/amber accent bubbles.
At no point did we write a detailed specification. The feature emerged through conversation. The prompts were simple — the vision was specific.
What Prompt Engineering Gets Wrong
Prompt engineering treats AI as a compiler — a system that converts precise instructions into precise outputs. Feed it the right input, get the right output.
But modern AI models aren't compilers. They're collaborators. They understand intent, context, and nuance. They can infer what you want from how you describe the feeling, not just the specification.
The best "prompt" for building a website that stands out isn't a 500-word system instruction. It's a clear mental image of what you want to create, described in plain language, refined through iteration.
The Real Skills for AI-Powered Development
If prompt engineering is overrated, what skills actually matter?
1. Clarity of vision — Can you describe what you want to build before you know how to build it? Can you articulate a feeling rather than a specification?
2. Iterative refinement — Can you look at a result and say what's wrong with it in useful terms? "This is boring" is more useful than "change the border-radius to 12px."
3. Combinatorial thinking — Can you see connections between unrelated features? "What if the 404 page had a game?" is a combination of error handling + entertainment that nobody specifies in a prompt.
4. Quality intuition — Can you tell the difference between "this works" and "this is special"? The gap between functional and remarkable is where the best AI-assisted work happens.
5. Knowing when to push — "This is good" stops iteration. "This is good, but what would make it great?" is where breakthrough features emerge.
Try This Instead of Prompt Engineering
Next time you work with AI on a project:
- Start with the feeling, not the code
- Describe it like you're talking to a designer, not a compiler
- React to the output honestly — "boring," "generic," "not unique enough" are all valid feedback
- Let ideas compound — don't plan everything upfront
- Merge unrelated concepts when things feel stale
